Due to the possibility of a Russian invasion, I will be traveling to Kyiv shortly to assist in the evacuation of orphanages from the eastern regions of Ukraine.  This effort will be in coordination with the UWO and any participating Ukrainian government agency as well as fellow NGOs.

I will be collecting emergency medical supplies for my trip in the event that hostilities erupt during my stay.  If you care to donate, the following items will be very helpful:

• Respirators rated for TB or better (0.9micron)
• Disposable airway kits
• Disposable bag valve resuscitators (infant and pediatric)
• Burn sheets
• Band aids (all sizes and shapes)
• Abdominal pads
• Trauma dressings
• Sterile dressings
• Gauze rolls
• Waterproof medical tape
• Elastic bandages
• Eye pads
• Petroleum gauzes
• Nitrile gloves (small and medium)
• Hot/Cold packs
• Iodine (preferably in individual packs rather than bottles)
• Kelly forceps
• Shears
• Burn pads
• CPR masks (disposable)
• Triple antibiotic ointment
• PVP swabsticks
• Blood Stopper bandages
• Kerlix rolls
• Hand sanitizer
• Finger splints
• Hand-powered pediatric suction units
• Rubbing alcohol swabs

I cannot carry much, so only a little will be required. To all you EMS personnel: I am open to using any other items you suggest.

SMTP Program Director Abby Kalainkas

SMTP Program Director Abby Kalainkas

We are happy to announce that the inventory for our humanitarian aid shipment to the Kyrgyz Republic has been logged and paperwork submitted to the US State Department.  In total, Abby Kalainikas, director of our SMT program, collected 139 boxes of aid material weighing almost 1,850 lbs.  These supplies will be distributed to orphaned, street, and foster children across the KG Republic.  Our material will help thousands of Kyrgyz children in need for several years. Our hope is to participate in the SMT program again in 2015 and will target Moldovan orphanages as the beneficiaries of our effort.  Many thanks to Abby for such a stellar job!

Sarah 1

From Co-Founder Alex Gowen:

Did you know that I never had a hero?  I had many whom I admired, but no heroes.  Well, now I do.  She has an infinite capacity to love; cares about all living things; is the first to offer help to anyone in need – especially when they don’t ask; never seeks fame, fortune, or glory; sacrifices so that others may have; and excels in the face of adversity.  Though her challenges are great she still presents the most beautiful smile and opens her heart to the world like an angel.  She is fearless and fights like a warrior poet.  Her name is Sarah – she is my hero.  The Fishermen would not have existed without her and now thousands of orphaned children are alive and well because of her inspiration.  You are amazing.  Thank you for being who you are!

Today is International Women’s Day – please join me in recognizing Sarah for her outstanding contribution to the world.
