Update on “Combatants of North and South Kivu” Release Date

At work on our balcony in late December

My work continues on “Combatants of North and South Kivu”.  Though originally intended as a simple report, it has now exceeded 80 pages so I am declaring it a book.  The final product will be a fully illustrated guide to assist aid workers identify combatants and will provide basic information on the structure and background of the major rebel groups.  I hope that my work will help fellow NGOs navigate the constantly changing nature of the ongoing conflict in the eastern DR Congo.  I am dedicating 12 hours a day to complete this book as quickly as possible and should be done by the end of January.

Happy New Year Message from Founder Alex Gowen

People often ask me why I give so much when I have so little.  I always reply, “because it is the right thing to do”. I have done plenty of wrong in my life and I am definitely not perfect, but I try to do the best I can to be a better person.  Giving what little I have to those who have nothing is one way I choose to do this.

It doesn’t matter who you are or what path you have chosen – it is never too late to do good.  Whether it is delivering food to the homeless or handing your umbrella to a stranger caught in the rain, be there for others even if they don’t ask for help.

My suggestion for the year ahead is to live without fear and always try to do what is right and good, even if it causes you pain and suffering.  I believe you will find that someone is looking out for you, too. Happy new year!

PS:  Sarah and I like to plant trees wherever we go, which is why I am holding a seed in this photo.

Today I submitted my proposal to UNICEF requesting a collaborative effort to provide our “Do Not Touch” MRE/ERW coloring book to schools and orphanages across Afghanistan.  With UNICEF’s participation we will have the necessary means to ensure that our well-researched and formatted publication reaches those in need.  It is our hope that this educational effort will save the lives of many Afghan children.

2012 has been our most productive and successful year so far, to include:

  • gaining our Special Consultative Status with the United Nations,
  • completing of our “Do Not Touch” coloring book for Afghan children,
  • making great advances towards finalizing our “Basic Medical Care” guide (or “the Hurt book”, as it is now called) for children,
  • Joanna’s creation of a physical/sexual abuse identification handbook for aid workers,
  • our work addressing the DR Congo and its refugee crisis,
  • posting numerous helpful reports on our web sites,
  • and the addition of outstanding new staff members Karen, Ravi, Janine, Mabiki, and Abby.

It is our hope that 2013 will be even better and brighter!  Thank you for all of your support – we could not have done it without you.  We wish everyone a wonderful holiday season!

We wish to thank Abby Kalainikas for planning and executing a successful donation drive to collect desperately-needed hygiene supplies for orphaned children in the Kyrgyz Republic.  Abby’s community-oriented strategy amassed enough material to provide aid to three or more orphanages and foster services within Bishkek and Balykchy.  Great work, Abby!

Indian Orphanages Being Inspected

Refugee Program Director Ravi Mehta

Refugee Program Director Ravi Mehta

Our Refugee Program Director, Ravi Mehta, is currently in India and will be examining potential recipients of medical supplies from our organization.  Personal inspection and vetting of orphanages is very important to small organizations such as ours – every bandage stolen by scam operations is a bandage which can never be used by a child in need. We wish to thank Ravi for ensuring that our supplies will be shipped to a legitimate orphanage for use by the orphaned children of India.

DR Congo Mission Update

Our Strategic Humanitarian Aid/ Relief Specialist, Karen Lumbu

Our Strategic Humanitarian Aid/ Relief Specialist, Karen Lumbu

Karen Lumbu, our Strategic Humanitarian Aid/ Relief Specialist, has been coordinating with World Relief over the past few months in order to ensure that our aid shipment to the DR Congo reaches the people safely and fully intact.  Small IDP camps with higher numbers of children are being identified.  Once accomplished we will hold an emergency meeting to make final preparations to depart for the DR Congo.  At this time we welcome medical volunteers to request participation if desired.  Please bear in mind that the situation in North Kivu is still unpredictable – what we plan one day may be undone the next.  It is frustrating, but unavoidable.  Thank you, Karen, for helping us prepare  for this complex but important mission.
